Employers, successful entrepreneurs, career consultants have been talking about ‘communication skills’ lately. No matter what profession you choose, you must be proficient in it. And the most suitable time for this is student life. Mahzabin Ferdous, Head of Brand and Corporate Communications at IPDC Finance Limited, a financial institution, has advised on becoming more proficient in communication from the time you are in college or university. The article was highlighted.
Keep ideas about different types
Some write well, some say well, some are good listeners, some know-how to present themselves well (give presentations). To develop communication skills, one has to make oneself fluent and efficient in all types of communication. In this case, just as it is essential to speak and write fluently in Bengali and English, it is also necessary to understand something and listen with the mind. Whether the other person understands what you are saying or understanding the other person depends on communication skills.
A lot to read
Simply put, those who read a lot, they find out about many things. Whether it is a book-magazine-newspaper on paper, an e-magazine, e-magazine or a career-science-business portal on the internet, keeping a regular eye can get an idea of all the latest issues. To develop communication skills, you have to keep in mind the formula called ‘Five W-H’ whenever reading an article. The Five W-Hs are Who, What, Where, Where, Why and How. Why the author wrote the article, for whom he wrote it, what context he wrote it, what topics have been highlighted, what issues can be added, and how you would have written if you had written — these should be quickly drawn in the head. The more you read, the more you know, the more confident you will be in speaking. When there is a lack of knowledge, it becomes difficult to explain and understand.
To be followed
To develop communication skills, one needs to know the techniques of public speaking or presentation of one’s thoughts. One of the most talked-about books on presentation techniques is The Presentation Secrets of Steve Jobs by Carmine Gallo. The book discusses various business-related presentations by Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple Computer Inc. You can easily follow any famous person’s strategies if you want to make yourself proficient. You will find many videos on YouTube about world-renowned business people, entrepreneurs and influential people speaking strategies. You can also read Chris Anderson’s Ted Talk: The Official Ted Guide to Public Speaking.
Can do the course
Georgia Tech University in the United States has a famous online course for communication skills development. Web address: coursera.org/specializations/improve-english. There are opportunities to learn business or work communication, e-mail writing, presentation-making techniques from the system. About 6,000 students have registered for the course. Some introductory studies are being conducted in the first year of different universities to develop communication skills. In many cases, students do not pay attention to these courses. Although credit is not directly linked to these courses, the systems are quite useful in preparing yourself for the next career.
Must learn to practice
Look at cricket-football-badminton or any other player; they are in practice all the time. Communication skills are also developed through the daily routine. So we have to pay more attention to technique. From writing a simple e-mail to giving a speech, you have to have your own identity in each case. You may be sending e-mails to a friend, talking to relatives, and practice good communication. You can take the opportunity to practice regularly by participating in various social communication skills sessions like Toastmasters or TedTalk. You can learn different practice techniques from Toastmaster’s guide book.
One can learn from mistakes
There are weaknesses at the beginning of anything; there are mistakes. It is normal to make mistakes when speaking or to give a presentation in English. We have to learn from our mistakes. At the end of their speeches, the famous speakers try to find out what was wrong with the audience. Seeing errors, others may laugh, may speak harshly then you should not be upset about all this. Try to overcome the mistakes you are making by taking notes in a diary.
Body language or ‘nonverbal’ communication
In the case of any communication, you don’t have to say. The same goes for writing. You need to know if he understands what you are saying or writing. You have to understand the environment; you have to know how to read others’ body language. Suppose you are presenting a great idea. You can tell by the body language of the listener whether he is listening to you or not. The smile on the face, the eye contact, the hand’s position or the movement are all important. Not only sound education but his alertness and dedication too are most required.
You have to know yourself
The proverb says – no self, know yourself. I need to know how I am, my personality, my strengths or weaknesses, my qualifications, and what I am good at. Communication skills will gradually increase if you focus on developing your character. Positive attitude, adaptability, and the ability to use your strengths effectively will keep you going.
You can advise a university teacher or a professional from a corporate organization to master communication skills. Get advice on what communication skills you need in the field where you want to build a career or what you are studying. Choose a coach or mentor to develop communication skills and try to learn from him hand-in-hand. Don’t think, ‘What is there to learn to speak again’.
Communication skills will allow you to develop leadership in any field. After becoming the leader of a party or a corporate organization manager, no one expresses communication skills. In developing communication skills, any person can become an officer from any organization’s apprenticeship and go from an ordinary member of the team to decision-making and leadership.
Seize the opportunity
Even if you are not very confident in speaking, writing or presenting your thoughts, do not miss any of these opportunities. Don’t keep yourself away from debates, business case competitions, essay competitions, lectures. Talk to people of different types, different professions.
